Earlier this month I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop at Syracuse, in which a group of about 15 creatives got together in a room to talk about “how they make it work.” It being their art. All of us make our living as artists.
The cohort, which had been part of this study for about four years, was a blend of creatives: writers, painters, photographers, etc. It was so great to get to be in a room with each other and ask that question. Huh, how do I make it work? We also got to share grievances, ask questions, and give each other ideas for how to improve processes, funding, etc.
As a mentor and writing coach to writers of many ages, I get asked this “How do you make time for writing” question a lot. When do you write? What’s the process look like? What’s a typical day look like for you? What are your struggles? What’s exciting about this lifestyle? Why are you even doing this?
Why the hell are you writing?
As a writing instructor who has her hand in a lot of different projects — arts journalist, variety show host, literary magazine founder, editor, writing coach, ghost writer/co-writer and oh yea, a fiction writer, duh — I get questions related to process (especially “when do you write”) in every class, across every genre.
I wanted to bring together artists from across mediums (with a soft spot for writers because that’s my world, but all are welcome, please!), so we can bounce ideas off each other. Sometimes, it’s just nice to talk to other artists and to not feel so alone in this thing we’re trying to do.
This group will take place a couple times a month, and I’ll always post the next one on my website.
NEXT CREATIVE CHAT: Sept 12 @ 3 pm PST
This is free for all paid subscribers, which is only $5 a month. If you’d like to try it out for a month, feel free to do a one-time subscribe. This is *way* less than the cost of a class, and I want whomever wants to come, come!
I’ll moderate questions - if you have a burning question at top of mind, put that in the chat. I’ll start off by answering the first question, and select which question is next, then open that question up to the group.
If you want to ask questions to get the ball rolling, feel free to post them here and I’ll be sure to get to those ones first!
I’ll send the Zoom link to all paid subscribers the day before the talk, and again 1 hour beforehand. Please come! I can’t wait to chat in real time.
Wow. Lady, you rock! I'm excited to attend and continue to learn from you how to grow as a writer..
You’re just awesome!
